"Final Call Wasn't Ours": India Coach Clarifies Concussion Substitute Controversy

01 Feb 2025

India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has clarified that the final decision on the controversial concussion substitute during the fourth T20I against England was made by match referee Javagal Srinath. The issue arose after Shivam Dube was replaced by debutant Harshit Rana, who went on to take three key wickets in India's 15-run victory.

England captain Jos Buttler raised concerns, questioning whether Rana was a "like-for-like" replacement for Dube. He suggested that the substitution had a major impact on the outcome of the match. However, Morkel defended the move, stating that team management proposed the substitution, but the ultimate authority rested with the match referee.

The incident has reignited discussions around the ICC’s concussion substitute rule, which mandates that replacements must be approved to ensure fairness. With growing debates on its application, cricketing authorities may look into refining the process to avoid future controversies.
